Spain local tax and voucher incentives

Overview

In late July 2026, Spanish municipalities began rolling out new financial incentives aimed at boosting local economies. The La Laguna City Council announced a €1.4 million voucher programme, selling 70,000 vouchers at half price to residents and allowing a range of small businesses—including, for the first time, tattoo studios—to participate. The scheme is managed by the Federation of Urban Areas of the Canary Islands and is intended to increase footfall for retailers and service providers.

A day later, the Fuengirola City Council and La Laguna municipal government extended tax-discount measures. Residents who settle property, vehicle, and waste taxes before a set deadline can receive a 30% discount, with additional reductions for bank-transfer payments. In La Laguna, a 5% discount is offered to taxpayers who set up automatic debits for various local taxes, and the voluntary waste-tax payment window was clarified.

By mid-August, La Laguna expanded its fiscal support by offering a personalized payment plan that allows citizens to split municipal tax payments into up to 11 interest-free installments. This program, designed to help families and small businesses manage liquidity, has been utilized by 3,855 taxpayers to manage over €2.3 million. Eligible taxes include property tax (IBI), vehicle circulation tax, waste collection fees, and vehicle access fees (vados). These parallel initiatives reflect a broader trend of Spanish local authorities using both direct subsidies and tax relief to encourage consumer spending and timely tax compliance.
