Spain renewable hybrid and storage projects
Overview
In late July 2026, a $200 million hybrid wind-solar-battery plant in Bolivia entered its environmental impact assessment, while Spain’s EDP completed the Iberian Peninsula’s first integrated hybrid facility in Tébar, combining wind, solar and lithium-ion storage to provide grid flexibility.
By early August, Spain’s renewable-storage portfolio expanded through several key initiatives. In the Canary Islands, a photovoltaic microgrid with battery storage was installed at Teide National Park to power public buildings between El Portillo Alto and El Portillo Bajo. Funded by nearly €500,000 from Next Generation EU funds and built by Tragsa, the system provides 24-hour clean electricity, eliminating the need for diesel generators. In Andalusia’s Los Barrios industrial zone, energy firm Coagener received environmental authorisations for three battery-storage projects—Teleiro, Beliche, and Ingrina. These 5 MW plants, representing a combined 15 MW of storage, have been granted grid-connection permits by Endesa and are awaiting construction.
Later in August, the Spanish government authorized Grenergy to construct four additional battery storage facilities at its Altarejos photovoltaic complex in Cuenca. The plants—Aitana, Aspe, Bañuela, and Turbón—will each provide 21.69 MW of power and 43.38 MWh of storage. Once completed, these hybridized solar-battery systems will reach a combined capacity of 86.76 MW of power and 173.52 MWh of storage, utilizing existing infrastructure to connect to the Villanueva de los Escuderos substation.
These developments reflect a rapid rollout of hybrid and storage-focused renewable projects across Spain, aimed at enhancing grid stability and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
