Spotify expands AI and personalization
Overview
In late July 2026 Spotify announced two new features that broaden its service beyond music streaming. On July 29 the company rolled out Running Mode, an AI‑driven tool that creates custom workout playlists based on user‑selected tempo, genre and duration. The feature debuted for Premium subscribers on iOS in seven markets – the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden – and does not rely on real‑time sensor data.
The following day Spotify introduced User Notes, allowing users aged 16 and older to attach short personal captions to individual tracks in their playlists. The annotation appears beneath the song and links to the author’s public profile, visible to anyone who can view the playlist. User Notes is being released gradually across selected markets and is available to both free and Premium accounts.
Running Mode assembles music from 25 preset configurations, offers optional English voice cues that announce warm‑up, interval and cooldown phases, and is accessed through the Fitness Hub section of the app. Spotify frames the launch as part of a broader fitness push that complements its Peloton‑derived classes and follows Strava’s decision to discontinue direct Spotify integration.
Spotify notes that the growing collection of User Notes will eventually form a composite picture of the songs listeners love and the personal moments that shape their musical tastes, underscoring the company’s strategy to deepen engagement through AI‑generated content and user‑generated metadata.
