Stellantis MHEV technology and Fiat Argo X production

Overview

Stellantis is advancing its mild hybrid (MHEV) technology through prototype testing of upgraded battery systems for models such as the Peugeot 208 and 308. This 48-volt architecture is intended to increase battery capacity to approximately 0.9 kWh to reduce reliance on internal combustion engines across various group brands.

In terms of manufacturing, the company announced that production of new mild hybrid engines will begin at the Pratola Serra plant in 2029. These engines are slated for use in Ducato models produced at the Atessa and Gliwice plants. This move follows demands from the FIOM-CGIL union for industrial diversification to ensure plant stability during the transition to new mobility technologies. The plant is currently navigating a delicate period following the exit of approximately 300 workers through incentive programs, with union representatives seeking further clarity on production volumes and long-term employment impacts.

Expanding its regional product offerings, Fiat has moved forward with the Argo X for the Brazilian market. Following the release of official images showcasing a digital design language with pixel-style lighting and “X” shaped daytime running lights, production has officially commenced at the Stellantis plant in Betim, Minas Gerais.

The Argo X utilizes the CMP platform, an architecture intended to underpin future models including new generations of the Pulse, Fastback, Mobi, and Strada. The vehicle is scheduled for a commercial launch in mid-November 2026 and will coexist with the current Argo generation. Safety features include six airbags as standard, with higher trims offering autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. Mechanical options include a 1.0 Firefly engine with a manual transmission or a 1.0 Turbo Flex engine featuring 12V mild-hybrid technology paired with a CVT transmission.
