STJD disciplinary actions in Brazilian football

Overview

The Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva (STJD) has issued several disciplinary sanctions involving personnel from various Brazilian football clubs following incidents in the Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa do Brasil.

Botafogo left-back Marçal faced a potential suspension of two to six matches after receiving a red card for aggressively protesting officiating decisions during a 1-1 draw against Fluminense. The complaint cited a violation of Article 258 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice regarding disrespecting refereeing staff. Marçal was noted to be unavailable for Botafogo’s match against Vitória.

Additionally, the STJD sanctioned officials from São Paulo and Grêmio. São Paulo executive director Rafinha received a 15-day suspension for disrespecting the officiating crew, though the penalty was converted into a warning. Grêmio vice-president Rafael Hansen was issued a 20-day suspension and a R$ 500 fine for offenses against the honor of the referees, which prevented him from accompanying his team during the first leg of the Copa do Brasil quarterfinals against Internacional.

Following a Copa do Brasil quarter-final match between Atlético-MG and Cruzeiro, further sanctions were issued. Player Alexsander received a two-match suspension for insulting Kaio Jorge in the anti-doping room. Atlético-MG was fined R$ 19,000 for match delays and missing equipment, while being acquitted of charges regarding objects thrown onto the pitch. Cruzeiro was fined R$ 15,000 and ordered to pay R$ 31,428.62 in damages to Atlético-MG due to issues in the visitor sector, though the club was acquitted of disorder charges.
