Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev noted that Kolev’s bracelet lacked a necessary tracking device, prompting an investigation into potential negligence. The controversy highlights a technical gap in a system purchased in 2018 for approximately 1.34 million BGN. Further investigation by the Ministry of Justice revealed that the majority of the 159 individuals under house arrest use standard bracelets that lack GPS capabilities. Specialized GPS units are limited to a small group of approximately 50 individuals.

On September 5, Kolev was arrested by Spanish authorities in Valencia while broadcasting live on TikTok. Following his arrest, Kolev refused voluntary extradition to Bulgaria. This refusal has shifted his case from an accelerated procedure to a standard judicial process under Spanish Law 23/2014. Spanish magistrates must now determine if the legal requirements for extradition are met, a process that could take between 60 and 90 days. The court will verify the legality of the request regarding his Bulgarian charges, which include hooliganism, driving under the influence of cocaine, and the display of a pneumatic rifle.
