Student protests and school occupations in Naples

Overview

Student mobilization in Naples has expanded from housing concerns to broader grievances regarding the public education system. In late September, students at Federico II University began protesting the local housing crisis by setting up tents at the Porta di Massa campus. Led by the Collettivi Autorganizzati Universitari (Cau), the movement launched the ‘MoNapoly’ campaign to protest high rents and real estate speculation, calling for government-managed affordable housing. By mid-October, the unrest spread to various high schools across the city, including Liceo Palizzi, Tito Lucrezio Caro, and Umberto. These occupations focus on deteriorating educational conditions, such as dilapidated buildings, teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, and inadequate facilities. The movement has gained political solidarity from groups like the Partito della Rifondazione Comunista, with participants framing the protests as part of a wider international trend regarding social inequality and education funding. On October 19, the wave of occupations intensified, involving approximately a dozen high schools and the Università degli Orientale. At Alberti high school, an external raid occurred where unidentified individuals entered the building by climbing walls and through windows. During the confrontation, students were reportedly attacked, and intruders used a fire extinguisher to spray the interior, leaving classrooms covered in smoke and white powder. At the Università degli Orientale, classes at the Palazzo Giusso location were canceled for October 19 and 20, prompting a transition to online teaching. On October 26, the Cau organized a tent encampment in front of the Palazzo San Giacomo, the city’s municipal headquarters. Protesters delivered a symbolic eviction notice to Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, citing ‘grave political and social non-compliance regarding the housing crisis.’ Activists criticized the use of PNRR funds for private operators and noted that single rooms can cost between 600 and 700 euros per month.
