Subaru Impreza updates and electric vehicle expansion
Overview
Subaru has announced updates to its Impreza lineup across different markets. In the United States, the 2027 Impreza will see the revival of a base trim level with a reduced starting price of $25,840, making it the most affordable all-wheel-drive compact car available. This model features a 180-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, while the higher-tier RS trim starts at $30,740 and includes larger 11.6-inch touchscreens, wireless connectivity, and heated front seats.
In Japan and Australia, Subaru is introducing a ‘Smart Edition’ hatchback. This version utilizes a 2.0L DOHC direct-injection gasoline engine paired with a Lineartronic CVT and includes navigation functions as standard equipment. The Smart Edition is available in both front-wheel drive and symmetrical all-wheel drive configurations, with pricing starting at 2,865,500 yen for FWD and 3,135,000 yen for AWD. In Japan, the Impreza (D-type) updates effective September 2026 will discontinue the e-BOXER hybrid system, moving exclusively to the 2.0L gasoline engine for the Smart Edition trim.
Further updates for the 2027 model year include a €2,000 price reduction for the Impreza in certain markets and the implementation of a more powerful 2.5-liter boxer engine to replace the previous base 2.0-liter unit, aligning its performance more closely with the Crosstrek.
Additionally, Subaru is expanding its electric vehicle portfolio with the 100% electric e-Outback. Developed via a partnership with Toyota using the e-TNGA platform, the vehicle is manufactured at the Yajima plant near Tokyo. The e-Outback features a dual electric motor producing 381 horsepower and has launched in the Italian market with prices starting at €53,900.
