Swedish crime crackdown 2026

Overview

From mid‑May through early August 2026 Swedish police intensified a nationwide crackdown on violent and property crime. The operation led to arrests in multiple violent incidents—including a teen murder in Gävle, a contract‑killing plot linked to Cologne, a double‑shooting in Eskilstuna, a knife attack in Halmstad, and a fatal incident in Alvesta—plus prosecutions for aggravated rape and a DNA‑genealogy breakthrough in the 2005 Brattås murders. International cooperation produced 172 arrests abroad by mid‑July, and the government granted police expanded powers to seize cash, jewellery and vehicles, raising the clearance rate for gang‑related murders above 60 %.

Police data released in early August showed a sharp decline in property crimes: residential burglaries and break‑ins fell 36 % (January‑July vs 2022), boat‑thefts dropped 47 % and vehicle‑thefts 64 %. Overall reported crimes halved, from 35,420 incidents in 2022 to 16,152 in the same period of 2026. Authorities attribute the trend to faster cross‑border information sharing and a more aggressive use of immigration law, with more than 400 expulsions in 2025 and 240 so far in 2026. Intercepted mobile‑phone chats reveal criminal groups warning that Sweden has become a difficult target. Police spokesperson Linda Staaf Bydén said the measures aim to prevent crimes before they occur and that the force is now turning attention to the “hidden crime” of the criminal economy—money‑laundering, fraud and welfare abuse—while urging continued public vigilance.
