In the hotel sector, June 2026 saw 4.1 million overnight stays, a 2.2% decrease from the previous year and the fourth consecutive monthly decline. While domestic stays rose by 0.7%, foreign guests decreased by 2.0%. While preliminary estimates suggested a 0.3% rise in total overnight stays driven by a 3.8% increase in domestic stays, subsequent data from the Federal Statistical Office reported a 0.6% increase in total stays. This growth was supported by a 4.1% rise in domestic tourism, though foreign visitor stays fell by 2.3%. Demand from Asian markets saw notable declines, with stays from India, the Gulf States, and China decreasing by 16.8%, 11.4%, and 10.6%, respectively. European demand was mixed, showing increases from Germany, the Netherlands, and France, but significant drops from the United Kingdom and Italy.

Despite the July uptick, total stays for the first half of 2026 remained down 0.7% at 20.3 million. Simultaneously, net migration to Switzerland fell by 12.5% in the first half of 2026, totaling 29,884 people. This was driven by fewer arrivals from EU/EFTA countries and third-state nationals, combined with rising emigration. In the Canton of Ticino, cross-border commuters decreased by 0.6%, with a specific decline in workers from Italy attributed to a 2023 tax agreement and improved working conditions in Italy.
