Syrian energy infrastructure damage and power outages

Overview

A gas pipeline explosion in the Damascus countryside near the Tishreen Thermal Power Plant caused the shutdown of three major power plants: Deir Ali, Nasiriyah, and Tishreen. The Syrian Electricity Company warned that the loss of generating capacity would increase scheduled power rationing. This incident followed a separate gas pipeline fire in the Deir ez-Zor area, which authorities attributed to sabotage. Following the explosion, technical teams began restoring the energy grid by isolating the damaged section of the pipeline. The Al-Nasiriyah and Deir Ali power stations have since returned to service. However, the Tishreen power station remains offline due to significant damage to its equipment and the feeding gas line. A joint technical committee has been formed to assess repair costs and rehabilitation timelines, while internal security forces investigate the cause of the blast. Recent developments indicate a pattern of attacks on the nation’s energy sector. On October 15, an explosion struck the Al-Jabsa gas pipeline in the Al-Arbeidi area of southern Hasakah province, northeastern Syria. The blast ignited a fire, prompting the state-owned Syrian Petroleum Co. to deploy emergency teams to isolate the affected section and shut off valves to contain the blaze. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident. This marks the fourth recent attack on energy infrastructure, following an oil pipeline sabotage in Hasakah on October 7, a gas pipeline explosion near Al-Shoula in Deir Ezzor on September 28, and an explosion on the Al-Jabsa gas export pipeline in August. Syria continues to rely heavily on imports to meet petroleum needs as infrastructure remains outdated. On October 16, the Syrian Petroleum Company reported additional disruptions. In the Hadida area west of Homs, an oil products pipeline transporting fuel from Baniyas to Homs was punctured.
