Taiwan election interference and bribery cases

Legal actions have been taken against local officials in Taiwan regarding election-related misconduct and interference.

In Taoyuan, an incumbent village chief surnamed Zhuang was arrested for allegedly attempting to bribe a potential political opponent with 400,000 TWD to withdraw from the November 28 local elections. Prosecutors determined the act violated the Public Officials Election and Recall Act, resulting in Zhuang being released on 300,000 TWD bail.

Separately, the Taiwan Supreme Court issued a final ruling involving former village chief Yao Wei-hua and Chien An-shih, chairman of the Chinese Youth Cultural and Educational Exchange Association. The court upheld sentences for the pair following an investigation into an election interference scheme involving funding from the Nanjing Taiwan Affairs Office. The scheme involved providing travel benefits to village chiefs to promote specific political slogans and candidates. Yao was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison, while Chien received 4 years and 8 months, with both losing their civil rights.
