Tamil Nadu political rivalry and party developments

Political tensions in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly have intensified during debates over the 2026-2027 budget and agricultural reports. Minister Adhav Arjunan has leveled allegations against DMK members regarding the operation of liquor distilleries and questioned Udhayanidhi Stalin over an alleged ₹900 crore receipt from a lottery company. In response, DMK Law Secretary E. Paranthaman and other opposition members have criticized the first 100 days of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) administration, labeling it a ‘circus government’ and citing concerns over rising crime rates, women’s safety, and drug trafficking.

To counter these criticisms, the TVK government has announced several major infrastructure and development initiatives. These include an industrial corridor and a coastal expressway connecting Chennai, Mamallapuram, Coimbatore, Puducherry, and Thoothukuppam, as well as an eight-lane road from Chennai to Kanyakumari. The administration also plans to implement a ₹500 crore AI-based surveillance system for road safety.

Opposition scrutiny has expanded as AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran criticized Chief Minister Vijay and his cabinet, alleging the administration has failed to fulfill public promises and lacks political understanding. Dhinakaran specifically targeted the handling of the Cauvery issue and claimed ministers disregard experienced leaders in the assembly.

On the organizational front, the TVK party continues to strengthen its structure through new appointments, including Dr. C. Vijay Bhaskar for Pudukkottai and M. R. Vijay Bhaskar for Karur. Additionally, the government has pledged ₹5 crore for a talent identification division to scout young athletes for the 2036 Olympics, with plans to establish an Olympic training center and an Olympic House in Chennai.
