Tanzania mandatory travel insurance regulations

Overview

Tanzania has implemented mandatory inbound travel insurance for foreign visitors entering the country via land, sea, or air. Under the Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations, 2026, non-citizens must hold valid coverage to avoid being denied entry. Citizens of East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) partner states remain exempt.

The policy became effective on October 1, 2026. It is valid for up to 92 days and allows for multiple entries. This requirement is separate from any private insurance travelers may already hold. The premium for adults aged 18 and older is $44.00 USD. Children between three and 17 receive a 50 percent discount, while children under three are exempt. Groups of ten or more people are eligible for a 10 percent discount on qualifying adult premiums.

Coverage includes emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation, repatriation, loss of luggage, baggage delays, accidents, and theft. For mainland Tanzania, insurance must be obtained through the National Insurance Corporation (NIC), while those entering Zanzibar must use the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation. Payments can be made online or at designated points of entry using Visa or Mastercard.
