teamLab digital art museum development in Tokyo

Overview

The Japanese digital art collective teamLab has announced plans to develop its largest museum to date, tentatively named ‘teamLab TOKYO’. The facility will be located in the Ariake district near Tokyo Bay.

The project is expected to span approximately 30,000 to 33,000 square meters. Development is planned in phases, with the first phase of roughly 14,700 square meters scheduled to open in January 2032, followed by a second phase of approximately 19,000 square meters in July 2033. Each section is intended to serve as a temporary cultural hub for about 10 years.

Beyond digital art installations, the site will feature plazas, cafes, and greenery-filled open spaces, including a ‘small forest’. The project also aims to include community engagement initiatives, such as educational programming for local schools. This expansion follows the success of existing locations like teamLab Borderless in Azabudai and teamLab Planets in Toyosu, the latter of which features immersive environments where visitors walk barefoot through water and light. The existing locations recorded a combined 4.2 million visitors in 2025. teamLab, founded by Toshiyuki Inoko, maintains a global presence with permanent exhibitions in Kyoto, Abu Dhabi, Jeddah, and Macao.
