Terrorism investigation near RAF Fairford

Overview

British counter-terrorism police are investigating a suspected terrorist plot targeting RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, a strategic United States Air Force base used by US bomber aircraft for operations in the Middle East, including strikes against Iranian missile sites. The investigation was triggered early on a Sunday morning after three suspicious white vans were spotted approaching the airfield. The incident, declared a “major incident” by Gloucestershire Police, led to the evacuation of approximately 85 households in the village of Welford and the establishment of a 400-meter security perimeter. The operation involved local and national police, the Ministry of Defence, and bomb disposal specialists, who used remote-controlled robots to examine the vehicles. Approximately 30 emergency vehicles, including fire engines and ambulances, were deployed to the area. Five British men from London, aged between 23 and 25, were arrested. Initially detained on suspicion of violating explosives laws, they are now being investigated for potentially preparing a terrorist act. While the suspects have since been released on police bail, they remain under investigation subject to stringent movement conditions. Counter Terrorism Policing is exploring multiple lines of inquiry, including potential involvement by proxies or individuals acting on behalf of foreign states such as Russia or Iran. Investigators are considering whether the plot is linked to non-state militant groups. The Iranian Embassy in London has categorically denied any involvement, describing allegations of Tehran’s connection as “unfounded and malicious speculation” designed to fuel Iranophobia. This follows previous warnings from Iran's Revolutionary Guard regarding the use of the base for military operations. As the investigation continues, the US Air Force's 501st Combat Support Wing remains on high alert.
