Thai government no-confidence motion proceedings

Overview

The Thai government and opposition are negotiating the schedule for an upcoming no-confidence debate. The motion is expected to focus on allegations of corruption and illegal conduct involving 18 ministers.

Cabinet Whip Paradorn Prisnanantakul proposed a three-day window from October 27 to 29, with a vote scheduled for October 30, to accommodate the Prime Minister’s international commitments at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the ASEAN Summit. While the opposition has requested a five-day period, government officials maintain that three days is sufficient.

Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, leader of the People's Party and opposition leader, has criticized the government for unilaterally proposing the three-day timeframe. He argued that such a short period would leave the opposition with only two days to question 18 ministers after accounting for government clarifications. Natthaphong urged the government to stop “thinking for the opposition” without consultation, noting that previous debates involving fewer ministers were granted four days of discussion plus a voting day.

House Speaker Sophon Saram tasked First Deputy Speaker Mallika Jirapanvanich with convening a meeting between the three-party whips to finalize the schedule, urging all parties to focus on factual evidence rather than personal insults. However, negotiations have since stalled. Following a meeting intended to resolve the dispute, opposition members walked out, leaving the timeline undecided. While the opposition suggested moving the debate to November or December to secure the requested five days, government representatives maintained that the late October dates remain sufficient.
