Thailand BOI strategic growth and electronics hub expansion

Overview

The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) has transitioned toward a strategic focus on high-value production, innovation, and sustainability. Following its 60th anniversary in August 2026, the agency reported that 2025 investment applications reached US$60.23 billion, a 67% increase over the previous year.

To support this momentum, the BOI signed a cooperation agreement with four major agencies to upgrade infrastructure within the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). This initiative aims to resolve industrial bottlenecks and support a regional investment goal of 2.6 trillion baht. Key components include ensuring stable supplies of industrial water and electricity for advanced manufacturing and data centers. Collaborations with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) involve exploring Small Modular Reactors and expanding the ‘Arc Grid’ to meet the nation’s 2065 net-zero emissions target. Additionally, plans include constructing large-scale desalination facilities and pipelines to mitigate drought risks, with the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) facilitating connections for industrial zones.

Furthering its high-tech ambitions, the BOI announced a strategic push during the Thailand Electronics Circuit Asia 2026 (THECA 2026) to transform the country into a regional electronics hub. This strategy focuses on building an ecosystem that connects Printed Circuit Boards (PCB), semiconductors, advanced packaging, and smart electronics. Since 2023, the electronics sector has attracted over $30.5 billion (approximately 1 trillion baht) in investment, with more than $10.1 billion concentrated in PCBs and electronic components. Secretary General Narut Terdsathirasak stated the goal is to elevate Thailand’s global competitiveness into the top 20 and sustain annual economic growth above 3 percent, noting that current investments are increasingly driven by frontier technologies and highly skilled labor.
