Thibau Nys cleared for Vuelta a España participation
Overview
Belgian cyclist Thibau Nys has faced a series of health setbacks that have jeopardized his preparation for the Vuelta a España. Initially, a knee injury forced him to miss the Giro d'Italia and limited his spring racing schedule. This was followed by an undisclosed infection that prevented his participation in the Clasica San Sebastián and the Vuelta a Burgos.
By mid-August, the nature of the illness was identified as toxoplasmosis. Nys suggested the infection may have been caused by consuming steak tartare. Despite these challenges, Nys’s father, Sven Nys, previously indicated there was a “90% chance” of participation, contingent upon physical condition.
As of August 17, Lidl-Trek has officially cleared Nys to participate in the Vuelta a España. Following a period of successful training and reassuring physiological values, team coach Paul Van Den Bosch confirmed the team has given the “green light” for his debut at the Spanish Grand Tour. While the team’s primary focus remains on Mads Pedersen and Mattias Skjelmose, Nys is expected to contribute to the squad’s efforts.
