Toyota Argentina industrial and energy expansion
Overview
Toyota Argentina has initiated several large-scale strategic developments focused on sustainability and manufacturing expansion. The company entered a five-year agreement with YPF Luz to supply approximately 900 MWh of renewable energy from wind and solar parks to six branches across four dealerships. This follows an existing partnership that provides 100% renewable energy to the company’s industrial plant in Zárate. In a major industrial expansion, Toyota Argentina has officially joined the Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI) to develop a new production facility in Zárate, Buenos Aires province. Formalized through Resolution 1848/2026 by the Ministry of Economy, the project involves a total investment of approximately US$ 1.252 billion. The plan focuses on constructing a third plant dedicated to manufacturing non-plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (full HEV), a technology with no local production precedent in Argentina. Initial production is slated for a pickup truck, with the potential for a future SUV version. The company intends to allocate roughly US$ 669.5 million—approximately 53% of the total investment—to local suppliers for works and equipment. The investment schedule includes US$ 19.5 million in the first year and US$ 147.75 million in the second, with a deadline to complete the minimum committed investment by September 30, 2028. While the government has formalized the project's inclusion in the RIGI program, Toyota must still complete internal authorization procedures to definitively confirm the execution of the investment. The project remains heavily export-oriented, with an estimated 70% of production destined for international markets. Following approval from the Evaluator Committee, the RIGI project investment figure has been updated to approximately US$ 1.341 billion, described as the “largest single investment in the history of the Argentine automotive industry.” This initiative aims to produce 100% electrified vehicles, with reports suggesting the production may include electrified versions of the Toyota Hilux.
