Traffic enforcement and incidents in Central Europe

Overview

Reports from late September and early October 2026 indicate a series of traffic-related incidents and law enforcement actions across Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.

Initial reports from Austria and Germany detailed various high-speed police chases, collisions, and driving under the influence. Incidents included an 18-year-old driver in Aspach exceeding speed limits by 70 km/h and a heavily intoxicated driver in Kundl crashing into a roundabout following a pursuit. In Germany, several motorists were apprehended for driving with high blood alcohol levels or resisting police during license confiscations.

Subsequent enforcement efforts expanded to include specialized checks in Germany and Switzerland. Authorities in Mainz conducted inspections at truck parking lots, while operations in Wörth, Hanau, and Fritzlar targeted motorcyclists and e-scooter users for speeding, drug use, and documentation fraud. In Switzerland, a driver was caught traveling at 149 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the A9 motorway. These regional activities coincided with a European-wide initiative, ‘Focus on the Road’, aimed at reducing distracted driving caused by mobile device usage.

In early October, enforcement intensified. In Mainz, truck parking lot inspections identified two drivers with blood alcohol levels exceeding 1.9 promille. In Willich, Germany, a 19-year-old motorcyclist attempted to evade a traffic stop by driving onto a sidewalk, resulting in minor injuries to a 44-year-old officer. Meanwhile, a large-scale operation in Vienna, Austria, targeted cyclists and e-scooter riders, issuing 155 fines and discovering e-scooters capable of reaching speeds of 60 km/h.
