Tropical storms Iselle and Julio in the Pacific Ocean

Overview

Tropical Storm Iselle has begun weakening as it moves west-northwest across the East Pacific. According to the National Hurricane Center, increased wind shear, cooler sea surface temperatures, and dry air are causing the system to lose deep convection. While Iselle is expected to become a post-tropical cyclone and eventually dissipate, swells generated by the storm continue to affect the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula, where forecasters warn of ‘life-threatening surf and rip current conditions’ for several days.

Simultaneously, Tropical Storm Julio has formed from Tropical Depression Ten-E, located approximately 1,086 kilometers west-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula with maximum sustained winds of 80 km/h. Meteorologists expect Julio to be absorbed by the more powerful Iselle within hours.

While neither storm currently poses a direct threat to land, authorities are monitoring a separate low-pressure area associated with tropical wave number 31. This system has a 90% probability of developing into a cyclone over the next seven days and could increase rainfall across western, southern, and southeastern Mexico.
