A search of his vehicle and his Downey home uncovered a loaded 9 mm pistol, a 16-round hollow-point magazine, an illegally modified AR-style short-barreled rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, body armor, radio-signal devices, and binoculars. Investigators also recovered 200 pages of writings containing schedules for First Lady Melania Trump and Secret Service members, alongside plans for surviving “off the grid.”

Taele was initially charged federally with possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle and faced various state weapons charges. On August 26, Los Angeles County Judge John Lonergan Jr. suspended the criminal charges pending a psychiatric evaluation. Citing concerns regarding “political partisanship and the disturbing nature of the notebooks,” the judge revoked Taele’s $250,000 bail and ordered him held without bail. Taele has been referred to a mental health court in Hollywood, with a competency hearing scheduled for September 9.
