Turkey food adulteration crackdown

Overview

In early July 2026 Turkey’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry published a safety list naming 15 food items – including sucuk, minced beef, salam, tea and olive oil – that contained prohibited animal parts, seed oils or unauthorized dyes, flagging six as a direct public‑health risk. Over 127,000 inspections resulted in fines totalling 242.8 million lira and criminal probes of dozens of firms. A detailed July list confirmed widespread fraud in meat, dairy (yogurt, butter, cheese), olive oil, honey and other products. On 23 July the ministry ordered a nationwide recall of Tahsildaroğlu’s “Olgunlaştırılmış Klasik Kırık Beyaz Peynir” after a consumer complaint on 16 June led to laboratory detection of *Listeria monocytogenes* in batch 290625. The Kocaeli Food Control Laboratory validated the finding; the affected 400 g packages were seized, destroyed and the producer fined. The company reported that the cheese was produced on a separate line and that inspections at 37 plant points found no additional contamination. Officials warned pregnant women, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals to avoid the recalled lot and emphasized Listeria’s ability to survive refrigeration. Continuing the crackdown, the ministry released a “Sağlığı Tehlikeye Düşürecek Gıdalar” list on 31 July, uncovering horse or donkey meat in frozen liver, meat chunks and red‑meat dishes in Adana’s Yüreğir district, similar adulteration in tantuni, beyran and roasted meats in Mersin, a banned food dye in a sauce in Ankara’s Yenimahalle, and the preservative natamisin in full‑fat cheese in Konya’s Ereğli. A dietary supplement sold in Adana was found to contain a pharmaceutical active ingredient. Dozens of firms and processing sites across the country were named, underscoring the breadth of the adulteration problem and prompting heightened inspection frequency and sampling. On 30 July the ministry issued an updated “Foods Endangering Health” list, adding dozens of additional counterfeit or adulterated products.
