Turkey poultry and egg production sector development

The poultry and egg production sector in Turkey is experiencing both localized infrastructure expansion and significant growth in international trade.

In the Bursa province, specific investments are underway to increase capacity. In the Mustafakemalpaşa district, a new breeding chicken facility is being planned with an investment of approximately 31.5 million TL, intended to house roughly 59,000 birds. Simultaneously, in the Yenişehir district, MAY Yiyecek İçecek Hizmetleri A. Ş. is expanding an existing facility to include over 252,000 additional chickens, targeting an annual output of approximately 73.2 million eggs.

On a national level, Ali Eroğlu, President of the Turkish Veterinary Medical Association (TVHB), has highlighted Turkey’s strong potential in the egg sector, citing advanced infrastructure and trained human resources.

Recent trade data indicates a substantial surge in export performance. During the first nine months of the year, Turkey’s egg exports reached $418.6 million, a 54% increase compared to the previous year. The egg sector has become the leading category in animal product exports, which totaled $1.275 billion for the period. Specifically, table chicken egg exports rose by 132.4% to $153.15 million, while hatching egg exports reached $245.51 million.

Bedri Girit, Vice President of the Ege Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters' Association, attributed this growth to global shifts caused by avian influenza outbreaks in the US and five European nations, which increased demand from EU countries such as the Netherlands, Poland, Greece, Italy, and Belgium. Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry supported these trends by increasing export quotas for small-sized eggs by approximately five times, following assessments that domestic production was sufficient and prices remained stable.
