Turkey is undergoing a significant energy transformation, characterized by a substantial increase in renewable energy capacity and production. As of July 2024, the nation’s total installed electricity capacity reached 126,476 megawatts.

Renewable energy sources now account for 62.8% of this total capacity, totaling 79,433 megawatts. Within this sector, solar power contributes 27,507 megawatts (21.7% of total capacity) and wind power provides 15,358 megawatts (12.1% of total capacity). Combined, solar and wind energy make up 33.8% of the nation’s total installed capacity.

In terms of actual electricity generation, solar and wind power accounted for 23.7% of the country’s total production as of July 2024. Solar energy production reached a monthly record of 5.37 billion kilowatt-hours during that period. Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar noted that the country has undergone a major energy transformation over the last decade, highlighting that solar energy’s share was only 0.4% in 2016.
