Turkey renewable energy capacity and production growth
Overview
Turkey continues to expand its renewable energy footprint, reaching new production milestones in late 2024. In August, combined solar and wind electricity generation hit a record 9.9 billion kilowatt-hours. During this month, solar power contributed 5.16 billion kilowatt-hours (14.1% of total generation), while wind power provided 4.74 billion kilowatt-hours (12.9% of total generation).
Total electricity generation for August reached 36.71 billion kilowatt-hours. While solar and wind saw record growth, hydropower remained the nation’s largest single source, accounting for 24.7% of total generation with 9.08 billion kilowatt-hours. Overall, renewable energy sources accounted for 56.4% of the total electricity generated in August.
Data from the first eight months of the year indicates that hydropower, wind, and solar generation each reached their highest production levels for that specific period since 2000. During this eight-month window, renewable sources accounted for 60.3% of total electricity, while domestic sources contributed 73.2% of the total.
