Turkey traffic safety and public‑order crackdown

Overview

Turkey’s police and gendarmerie have broadened road‑safety and public‑order enforcement throughout July and August 2026. Early in the month, intensive checks in Niğde and Gaziantep resulted in significant penalties. On 22 July, the Gendarmerie expanded efforts to Yozgat, while the Çanakkale “Huzur” operation inspected over 57,000 vehicles. A coordinated nationwide sweep on 25 July led to 46 arrests for illegal residency and gambling.

In August, operations shifted toward narcotics and large-scale security sweeps. In Bursa, law enforcement inspected over 1,100 vehicles and detained 21 wanted suspects. In Istanbul, specialized units dismantled a site in Zeytinburnu disguised as an auto repair shop, seizing 115.5 kilograms of AM-2201 raw material. Additional narcotics efforts in Haymana, Ankara, resulted in the discovery of 150 kg of methamphetamine hidden in a truck. In Aydın, a two-week security campaign led to 99 arrests and the apprehension of 173 wanted individuals.

By 8 August, reports highlighted ongoing volatility. In Istanbul's Fatih district, a Moroccan national was shot and apprehended by police after attacking a traffic officer with a knife; methamphetamine was found on the suspect. Public safety was also impacted by several accidents, including a fatal multi-vehicle collision in Mersin that triggered a forest fire, and a collision on the Izmir-Ankara highway that left three people injured, two of whom are in critical condition.
