Turkish municipal greening and landscaping projects
Overview
Turkish local authorities continue to expand coordinated urban‑environment initiatives across multiple cities. In Tarsus, the municipality, the EU Climate Change Grant Programme and the Tarsus Chamber of Commerce hosted a Green Roof Drafting Workshop to discuss regulations targeting carbon‑emission cuts, heat‑island mitigation, and biodiversity enhancement. Talas’ council advanced the “Every Seedling a Seedling” campaign, while Ankara’s Keçiören district managed flood damage recovery, and Antalya’s Kepez district introduced xeriscape landscaping.
Recent maintenance efforts have intensified in the Didim and Kuşadası regions. In Kuşadası, the Parks and Gardens Directorate conducted a comprehensive pruning operation on palm trees in the central medians of the ring road to remove dried or diseased branches. Deputy Mayor Tahsin Demirtaş noted that “protection of green spaces remains a priority,” stating the work enhances traffic safety and visual identity.
In Didim, municipal teams are performing extensive grass cutting, weed removal, and pruning across green spaces, roadsides, and coastal areas. Mayor Hatice Gençay stated that teams are working throughout the city to manage seasonal vegetation and maintain public order. These efforts are prioritizing high-usage locations, such as walking paths and coastal regions, to accommodate summer activity and ensure neighborhoods remain well-kept for residents and visitors.
These actions, alongside previous efforts in Bursa, Karabük, and Kemer, illustrate an increasingly broad municipal push in Turkey to improve urban livability, enhance green infrastructure, and address climate‑related challenges.
