Turkish municipal and provincial food safety inspections

Overview

Following the start of the 2026-2027 academic year, municipal and provincial authorities in various Turkish districts have intensified inspections of school canteens, student dormitories, and food production sites to ensure hygiene and food safety.

In Tarsus, Mersin, municipal police and health departments identified and destroyed expired milk and other unfit products. Mayor Ali Boltaç emphasized the municipality’s commitment to providing students with ‘healthy and reliable food.’ Similarly, in Seydişehir, municipal police have been reviewing business licenses, tax certificates, and product expiration dates.

Inspections have expanded to other provinces and sectors. In Çanakkale, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry conducted simultaneous audits at 11 KYK student dormitories, focusing on cold chain maintenance and kitchen hygiene. In Bilecik, municipal teams inspected school canteens for operating licenses and food quality, specifically checking meat products and noting that certain snacks and carbonated drinks should be avoided in schools. Additionally, in the Acıpayam district of Denizli, agricultural directorate teams performed nighttime inspections of bakeries to monitor bread production processes and ensure sanitation regulations are followed during primary production hours.

Recent efforts have also targeted consumer protection and pricing. In the Meram district, authorities are focusing on school canteens and businesses near educational institutions to verify hygiene, expiration dates, and price tags. In the Şehzadeler district, municipal teams are auditing chain supermarkets to identify discrepancies between shelf prices and register receipts, alongside checking shelf organization and general hygiene. Officials stated that while legal sanctions are applied to violators, the primary goal is to ensure a ‘safe and reliable shopping environment for consumers.’
