Turkish opposition facing mass defections to Yeni Parti

Overview

The Turkish opposition faces severe instability as a massive wave of elected officials departs the Republican People's Party (CHP). Recent reports indicate that out of 258 mayors who resigned from the CHP, 242 have joined the Yeni Parti. Furthermore, approximately three-quarters of the CHP's 3,650 municipal council members have transitioned to the new party.

In Istanbul, the shift is significantly altering local governance. The AKP has increased its control over municipal councils from 13 to 20. Within the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Council, the number of CHP members is projected to drop from 153 to between 10 and 15 by November as the Yeni Parti prepares to establish its own group. This follows the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu in March 2025.

Regional departures continue to impact local structures. In Alanya, 22 council members joined the Yeni Parti following the resignation of Mayor Osman Tarık Özçelik. In Konyaaltı, Mayor Cem Kotan resigned after disciplinary proceedings, and in Çiftlik, Mayor Arif Çakıl departed to serve as an independent, citing a “nullity management understanding.”

While the CHP maintains majorities in Tunceli and Edirne, the Yeni Parti has secured majorities in five other provinces. In Ankara, officials noted that Mayor Mansur Yavaş is managing the transition process within the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Council. Amidst these shifts, CHP officials like Utku Gümrükçü have warned that defections, such as Foça Mayor Saniye Bora Fıçı’s move to the AKP, could jeopardize the party’s future in regions like İzmir.
