Turkish traditional oil wrestling developments
Overview
Traditional oil wrestling continues to see both rising individual talents and established champions in Turkey. Osman Ali Davutoğlu, an 11-year-old Tanzanian-born wrestler known as ‘Arap Osman’, has emerged as a rising talent. Adopted by Turkish diplomat Ali Davutoğlu, the young athlete met with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the Presidential Oil Wrestling Cup in Istanbul. Following this, he participated in the 15th Traditional Sungurlu Oil Wrestling tournament in Çorum, which featured approximately 750 wrestlers, including 36 head wrestlers. In the Sungurlu tournament, Mehmet Yeşil Yeşil secured the championship title by defeating Ali Gürbüz.
In major professional competitions, Orhan Okulu has solidified his dominance. At the 674th Historical Elmalı Oil Wrestling Championships in Antalya, Okulu secured his seventh gold belt by defeating Osman Kan in a final match lasting over an hour. While Okulu won the Elmalı event, Feyzullah Aktürk was named the overall champion of the CW Enerji Türkiye Oil Wrestling League season.
Okulu further extended his success by winning the Presidential Oil Wrestling Cup at the Istanbul Atatürk Airport Millet Bahçesi, an event organized by the Turkish Traditional Wrestling Federation after a 57-year hiatus. In a final match lasting approximately two hours against Mustafa Taş, Okulu claimed the championship belt and trophy. The event was attended by President Erdoğan and Youth and Sports Minister Osman Aşkın Bak. Additionally, Ordu Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Mehmet Hilmi Güler was honored for the municipality’s efforts in “developing oil wrestling and preserving the traditional sport for future generations.” Expanding the competitive landscape, Osman Kan was crowned the head wrestler at the inaugural Pazarlar Oil Wrestling tournament in Kütahya.
