Twitch AI training policy faces legal action

The move has triggered significant backlash from the streaming community, with creators criticizing the lack of transparency and the decision to use an opt-out model rather than requiring upfront consent. Critics have raised concerns regarding the potential use of intellectual property, including voices and gameplay, and have questioned whether content was utilized for training prior to the introduction of the new setting. Head of Community Mary Kish also acknowledged that the change would likely provoke negative reactions. Following the policy implementation, streamer Warren Pandiscia filed a nationwide class action lawsuit against Twitch and Amazon in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. The lawsuit alleges the companies used broadcasts, recorded videos, and chat logs to train models without proper consent or compensation. The complaint asserts that these practices, which have reportedly occurred since at least 2024, constitute breach of contract, unjust enrichment, and violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law. Pandiscia is seeking damages exceeding 5 million US dollars on behalf of a class of millions of creators and is seeking a court order to halt the unauthorized use of intellectual property.
