Typhoon Saudel causes flooding and mass evacuations in China

Overview

Typhoon Saudel, which underwent a rare regeneration in the South China Sea, has caused widespread destruction across southeastern China. Following its third landfall in Zhangzhou, Fujian, the storm has triggered severe flooding and large-scale evacuations.

In Fujian province, the city of Fuding experienced flooding that submerged streets and vehicles, contributing to a Level II emergency response. In Ningde, rainfall exceeding 400mm within 24 hours led to road closures and the suspension of work and classes. In Putian, a dike breach near Xihu flooded villages and industrial parks. The city recorded 416.5 mm of rain in a single day, marking the highest for September on record. This extreme weather resulted in the collapse of over one hundred homes and the relocation of 1,261 people in the Chengxiang district to 30 emergency shelters. Total evacuations in Fujian have reached approximately 600,000 people.

Casualties have risen as the storm's impact spreads. In Jiangxi province, a mudslide in Suichuan County killed at least three people and left nine others missing after damaging approximately 12 houses. Rescuers recovered two additional bodies on Sunday, according to state broadcaster CCTV. Additionally, two people died in Hunan Province due to heavy rainfall and landslides triggered by the typhoon. In the Huating area, at least one person was reported missing, while a three-story house in Longhua Town, Xiandu County, was swept away by flash floods.

Authorities have activated emergency response levels in multiple provinces to manage geological and flood risks. A Level I rainstorm alert remains in effect, as the typhoon continues to saturate the soil, maintaining a high risk of secondary disasters. Emergency services are utilizing boats, drones, and life detectors to reach isolated communities and conduct search and rescue operations.
