UAE infrastructure and traffic management projects

Overview

Infrastructure development and maintenance in Sharjah and Dubai continue to impact traffic flow on major routes connecting the two emirates. While the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority has opened a 1,000-metre, two-lane bridge linking Sheikh Rashid Road to 2nd December Street to alleviate congestion at the World Trade Centre Intersection, commuters still face significant delays.

Recent reports indicate heavy congestion and accidents on the E311 (Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road), E611 (Emirates Road), and E11 (Al Ittihad Road). Comparative travel data shows that during evening rush hours, Emirates Road—despite being 25 kilometres longer—was the fastest route to Sharjah at approximately 1 hour and 2 minutes. In contrast, Al Ittihad Road took 1 hour and 27 minutes, while the E311 journey reached 1 hour and 40 minutes due to congestion near Mirdif.

To address regional connectivity, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed has approved the New Fourth Corridor project, a major 80km road infrastructure development designed to strengthen connectivity between Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. The project will be implemented in two phases to support logistics, urban growth, and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.

The first phase, costing approximately AED 3.5 billion, spans 30km from Al Shanouf Road in Sharjah to the Dubai–Al Ain Road. This 12-lane segment aims to reduce travel times by 60%, from 35 minutes to 14 minutes. The second phase will cover 50km, extending from the Dubai–Al Ain Road to Al Faya Road in Abu Dhabi, which is expected to reduce journey times by 52%. The entire corridor will feature 72 bridges, 17 tunnels, and 45 stormwater drainage culverts, passing key landmarks such as Al Maktoum International Airport and the Etihad Rail route.
