UEFA sanctions against Serbian football fans

Overview

UEFA has imposed disciplinary sanctions on the Football Association of Serbia (FSS) following fan misconduct during Nations League matches against Greece and the Netherlands. The misconduct included the use of pyrotechnics, pitch invasions, racist and discriminatory behavior, and the display of inappropriate political messages, such as chanting the name of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić.

Financial penalties totaling 129,500 euros were issued to cover various incidents. While initial reports suggested potential spectator restrictions for the upcoming home match against Germany on November 13, 2026, UEFA has officially enforced a sanction requiring Serbia to play the match behind closed doors at the Rajko Mitić Stadium.

In addition to the stadium ban, the FSS faces a further fine of 50,000 euros. Although the Serbian association attempted to mitigate the ruling by requesting access for children and up to 2,000 German supporters, the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed that German fans will be prohibited from attending the match in Belgrade. There may be minor exceptions for children up to 14 years old, provided they attend as part of organized school or club groups with appropriate supervision. This follows a previous sanction during the first leg in Munich, where Serbian fans were prohibited from purchasing tickets. The match remains highly significant for Germany, managed by Jürgen Klopp, as they compete in Nations League Group A2 to secure a spot in the quarter-finals.
