UK child injury incidents 2026 – Arbroath case

Overview

In early August 2026, UK authorities reported two separate child injury incidents. A three-year-old boy was seriously injured after being struck by a van at Red House Farm campsite near Chichester, Sussex, and was airlifted to hospital. The Sussex case remains under investigation with no arrests reported.

In a different region, nine-year-old Minnie Merriman of West Yorkshire was found injured at the Elliot Industrial Estate in Arbroath, Scotland, while her family was camping. She was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she later died.

Police Scotland arrested 35-year-old Christopher Rice, who was known to the child and identified as the girl's father. Rice has been formally charged with murder and appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court, where he did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody. While the investigation continues, police have stated they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death. A police cordon and forensic tent remained at the industrial estate, and specialist support has been provided to the family.
