Ukraine-Poland grain transit and trade dynamics

Overview

Ukrainian state railway operator Ukrzaliznycja has significantly increased grain transit to western borders. In October, the average daily transfer of grain wagons rose to approximately 336, a 4.7-fold increase compared to July. Poland remains the primary destination, receiving an average of 106 wagons daily, a 54 percent increase from September. Despite this growth, transit efforts face challenges from wagon congestion and Russian attacks on railway infrastructure and rolling stock.

Trade dynamics between Poland and Ukraine show shifting patterns. Polish exports to Ukraine reached 41 billion PLN during the first eight months of the year, a 15.4 percent year-on-year increase, while imports from Ukraine fell 3.9 percent in 2025 compared to 2024. To protect domestic producers, the Polish government maintains a ban on direct Ukrainian grain imports while allowing transit under strict oversight via the SENT system and GPS tracking.

Simultaneously, Poland is advancing major agricultural trade deals with Egypt. Negotiations with the agency ‘Future of Egypt’ have reportedly reached terms regarding prices and volumes for the export of hundreds of thousands of tons of Polish grain, potentially establishing a foundation for long-term cooperation. To optimize logistics, a secondary contract is being arranged to import up to 100,000 tons of urea from Egypt to Poland, utilizing return shipments from grain deliveries to reduce transport costs.
