Ukraine-Russia frontline conflict
Overview
Military operations remain intense across several sectors. In the Sumy direction, Russian assault units have made progress near Khoten and Kiyanitsa, creating an encirclement area of roughly 400 square kilometers, prompting Ukraine to transfer reinforcements from the Chernihiv region. In the Kharkiv and Kupyansk directions, movements have been reported as conflicting; while Russian forces have targeted logistics near Kupyansk-Uzlovoy and attempted to clear the Oskol river banks, Ukrainian forces have reportedly advanced west of Kalynove and north of Kupyansk, potentially improving flanking positions. Ukrainian forces have significantly intensified operations near Lyman, utilizing small assault groups and remote-controlled BTR-60 armored vehicles to penetrate Russian lines near Novoye and Redkodub. This offensive has resulted in substantial territorial gains, with Ukrainian forces advancing between 21 and 23 kilometers since early August, reclaiming settlements such as Drobyisheve, Yarova, Stavky, and much of Lyman. Recent maneuvers have also forced Russian troops to retreat beyond the Zherebets River. Additionally, Ukraine has regained control of the Sviati Hory forest and seen Russian retreats from Mykolaivka. Analysts suggest securing the Terny-Torske line could provide a path toward Kreminna. In the Dnipropetrovsk sector, Ukrainian forces achieved significant tactical gains, including clearing the gray zone, liberating Shevchenko, and establishing a bridgehead in Komar by crossing the Mokri Yały River. This has disrupted Russian logistics, forcing the transport of supplies from Velyka Novosilka via a 17-kilometer route. As of late October 2026, Ukrainian forces have made slow but tactically significant progress near Oleksandrivka, with reports indicating the liberation of Perebudova, Komar, and Fedorivka. These advances may threaten Russian operations in the Oleksandrivka and Huliaypole regions, prompting Russia to redirect elements from the Baltic and Pacific Fleets, as well as the 90th Tank Division, to the sector.
