U.S. Army autonomous warfare integration
Overview
The U.S. Army is undergoing structural and technological shifts to prioritize autonomous and unmanned systems. On October 13, 2026, Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Christopher LaNeve announced the redesignation of the Army Futures and Concepts Command (FCC) to the Army Futures and Autonomous Systems Command (FASCOM). This new command aims to consolidate several organizations to accelerate the deployment of autonomous fires, combat vehicles, and reconnaissance through fiscal year 2028.
During the annual Association of the United States Army (AUSA) convention in Washington, manufacturers showcased diverse unmanned platforms designed for supply transport, casualty evacuation, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and fire support. Featured technologies included robotic insects, dogs, and large armored fighting vehicles, such as BAE Systems’ Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV), a hybrid unit designed for both manned and unmanned operations with over 600 units already fielded.
These developments are central to Project Agincourt, an initiative led by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to transition the military toward autonomous warfare, supported by $1 billion in funding for drone dominance. To further this transition, Hegseth announced the creation of a new four-star command, the Autonomous Warfare Command (AUTOWARCOM), alongside a dedicated working group. Hegseth noted that lessons from Ukraine underscore the necessity of creating systems capable of rapid adaptation to changing battlefield conditions.
