Silver price outlook: supply deficits and market volatility
Overview
Silver prices have experienced recent volatility, trading near the $68 per ounce mark as markets react to economic indicators. While the metal maintains an upward trend, it faces scrutiny regarding upcoming U.S. inflation data and scheduled speeches from Federal Reserve officials, both of which influence Treasury yields and interest rate expectations.
Despite short-term price fluctuations and periods of profit-taking, the market continues to face a significant structural deficit. The Silver Institute now projects the market will enter its sixth consecutive year of supply deficit in 2026, with a shortfall of approximately 67 million ounces. This tightening is driven by a projected 20 percent increase in physical investment demand, a 70 percent decline in COMEX registered stocks since 2020, and Chinese export restrictions implemented in January 2026.
Industrial demand remains a primary driver for long-term consumption. Beyond traditional uses in solar photovoltaics, silver demand is being bolstered by the growth of artificial intelligence, data centers, electric vehicles, and broader electrification trends, with industrial use potentially exceeding 700 million fine ounces per year by 2030.
More recently, silver prices saw a modest rebound to approximately $66.70. This movement comes as market participants weigh hawkish signals from the Federal Reserve against rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Following the Jackson Hole Symposium, the probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate hike in September rose to 61%. Support has also been provided by safe-haven demand following reported military escalations involving U.S. forces and Iranian facilities on Larak Island, as well as claims from Tehran regarding strikes on U.S. military facilities in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
