US federal government America.gov AI portal launch

Overview

The Trump administration launched America.gov, an AI-powered portal managed by the General Services Administration and developed by the White House National Design Studio. The platform serves as a single entry point for federal information, consolidating data from approximately 29,000 federal websites into a conversational search interface powered by Google’s Gemini and xAI’s Grok models.

During its initial rollout, the portal’s chatbot drew scrutiny for providing factual responses that contradicted President Trump’s public stances on the 2020 election, climate change, and constitutional limits. In response, the chatbot began declining certain political inquiries, citing policies against responding to political topics, which sparked debates over the tool’s credibility.

Following the launch, the administration moved to rebrand the technology. President Trump signed an executive order directing the government to refer to artificial intelligence as ‘super intelligence.’ Additionally, following a meeting with 20 tech executives, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei, the president announced a new accord to establish principles and guardrails for safe AI advancement through audits and controls.

While the portal currently functions as a natural language search tool to assist with tasks like voter registration and replacing Social Security cards, the administration aims to expand its capabilities. An authentication login function is expected to be implemented by January, with the goal of allowing users to perform complex transactions—such as renewing passports, enrolling in Medicare, or applying for federal jobs—directly through the interface.
