US response to West Bank settler activity

Overview

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has condemned extremist Israeli settlers, labeling them ‘terrorists’ following a siege of Palestinian homes in the West Bank village of Qusra. The incident, which began around August 9, involved settlers encircling properties and cutting off access to electricity and water. Huckabee stated that such actions constitute a ‘violation of God’s law’ and warned that settlers targeting property owned by Palestinian Americans, such as resident Loui Ridi, could face sanctions from both Washington and Israel.

As the situation evolved, Huckabee expanded his criticism to include hate crimes, such as the alleged burning of a mosque in Bazariya. During a September 5 visit to Turmus Ayya to meet Palestinian Americans, Huckabee characterized settler violence as ‘criminal’ and ‘terrorist’ in nature, describing it as an ‘act of terror’ that goes beyond ordinary misconduct. He emphasized that the Israeli government bears the responsibility for providing security and warned of ‘dire consequences’ for perpetrators. He also addressed rumors regarding the Gaza Strip, stating there is no plan by Israel or the United States to forcibly displace Palestinians from Gaza, noting that any departure should be voluntary.

In response to increased pressure from the United States to curb settler violence, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly ordered the evacuation and demolition of several unauthorized settlement outposts in the West Bank. This directive targets approximately 100 outposts built without official Israeli government authorization, often in areas under Palestinian Authority control. While Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich had previously expressed disagreement, he later confirmed the order targeting outposts built without official authorization.
