Uttar Pradesh PDA acronym and alliance controversy

Overview

In late August 2026, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav further evolved the party’s PDA strategy for the upcoming 2027 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections. While the acronym traditionally stood for “Pichhda, Dalit, Alpasankhyak” (backward, Dalit, and minorities), Yadav introduced a second layer of meaning on X, stating the term now also signifies “Patience, Discipline, Action.” He framed these qualities as essential for social unity and prosperity.

Yadav continued his effort to court upper-caste voters by incorporating “aggrieved Pandits” into the concept. He suggested the term could be interpreted as “PeeDit Pandit” (Aggrieved Pandit), arguing that the perceived suffering of Brahmins under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would strengthen the PDA movement.

This reinterpretation follows previous friction involving the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). BSP chief Mayawati had demanded an apology from Yadav for allegedly insulting the Jat community and the family of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, to which Yadav responded that the SP remains a committed partner in its alliances.
