Van Chamber of Commerce election dispute and results

Overview

A dispute emerged regarding the voter lists for the Van Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Van TSO) elections, centered on the potential exclusion of 1,565 members. Candidate İrem Bayram raised concerns that these members, who had paid their fees after September 29, were barred because the Van TSO failed to submit a supplementary list to the District Election Board within the required timeframe. Bayram characterized the delay as a threat to members’ rights and called for transparency regarding whether the issue stemmed from administrative negligence or coordination failures.

The matter escalated to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, with DEM Party MP Mahmut Dindar arguing that an 80-minute delay in submitting the lists on October 8 placed the democratic legitimacy of the election at risk. The exclusion reportedly affected approximately 29 percent of the 5,380 total voters. The dispute was referred to the Supreme Election Council for a final decision.

Following the conclusion of the professional committee and council membership phase, the election results showed the Blue List, led by incumbent Necdet Takva, secured 10 out of 19 professional groups. The White List won 7 groups, the Green List won 2, and the Red List, led by İzzet Çoban, won none. The Red List leadership noted that results were below expectations. The process moves to the next stage on November 1, when the Board of Directors and Board Chairman will be determined by the newly elected council members.
