Vandalism of Chinese restaurant in Bundang

Overview

In the early hours of September 24, a Chinese restaurant named ‘Xi Jinping’ in Bundang-gu, Seongnam, was targeted by four unidentified masked suspects, aged between their 20s and 40s. The perpetrators broke through a reinforced glass door around 2:40 a.m. and spent approximately one hour damaging the premises. Their actions included tearing furniture, scratching a cash register, and spraying red and black lacquer and paint across walls, surfaces, and the restaurant’s signage.

Investigators recovered empty containers of pesticides and insecticides at the scene, leading authorities to suspect that a pesticide-like substance was intentionally sprayed onto food ingredients in the kitchen. The owner reported that the business had faced months of harassment, including protests and frequent phone calls, requesting a name change due to its similarity to the prominent Chinese political figure. The owner clarified that the name was selected to establish the restaurant as a prominent Chinese landmark rather than for political purposes.

Following the attack, which caused estimated damages of approximately 15 million won, the suspects traveled by taxi to Seoul before departing from Incheon International Airport for Yantai and Shanghai, China. South Korean police identified the four suspects as Chinese nationals. While authorities intend to pursue the case through international judicial cooperation, the restaurant has temporarily closed and has since changed its signage to a more neutral name to prevent further incidents.
