Veracruz port access infrastructure development
Overview
Infrastructure projects to improve access to the Port of Veracruz are progressing toward completion. In early August, the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) opened provisional traffic on the upper deck of a new 1.97-kilometre elevated road distributor. This phase allows two-way travel while the lower deck remains closed for pavement work and storm-water collector construction. The project is reportedly five months ahead of schedule and aims to reduce travel times by up to 25 minutes for the Veracruz-Boca del Río metropolitan area.
By late August, construction on a pedestrian bridge located on the MEX-140 federal highway, part of the larger distributor works, entered its final stages. The bridge, situated between Santa Rita and TAMSA, is designed to enhance road safety and pedestrian mobility by providing a secure crossing in a high-traffic zone.
In late August 2026, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that the roadway distributor is now expected to be completed in September 2026, accelerating the original December 2026 timeline. The project, involving an investment exceeding 820 million pesos, includes two lanes per direction, lateral roads, and the aforementioned pedestrian bridge. The infrastructure is intended to serve a route handling over 34,000 vehicles daily, potentially reducing travel times by 25 to 30 minutes. Ongoing work includes earthworks, paving, and the installation of concrete barriers. The project has reportedly generated over 16,000 direct and indirect jobs and is expected to benefit more than 700,000 residents in the surrounding municipalities.
