Vietnam Facebook group membership surge and subsequent block
Overview
The Facebook group ‘Con ghét bố mẹ’ (I Hate My Parents) has experienced a massive surge in membership in Vietnam. Originally established in 2021 with a few thousand members, the group grew to approximately 58,000 by late September 2026, before rapidly expanding to 262,000 by the morning of October 1.
Members, often posting anonymously, use the platform to share grievances including academic pressure, parental comparison, digital surveillance, and emotional neglect. While some view the group as a space for teenage rebellion, others use it to voice deeper traumas such as physical abuse or neglect. Some contributors also seek community support regarding complex family dynamics like divorce and financial instability.
The rapid growth has sparked public debate regarding youth mental health and generational tensions. Parents in Hanoi have expressed significant anxiety, fearing an ‘echo chamber’ effect where children may feel validated in viewing parental boundaries as mere impositions. Some parents report that middle and high school students have become more withdrawn or are increasingly interacting with these ‘toxic’ digital spaces.
Experts suggest the phenomenon may stem from a disconnect between traditional parenting styles and the digital lives of modern adolescents. Clinical psychologist Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Hien noted that the surge might be driven by social media viral effects and curiosity rather than a definitive increase in parental hatred, advising parents to focus on underlying communication issues rather than the group’s provocative name.
Following its viral expansion, which saw membership climb from 100,000 on September 29 to nearly 398,000 by October 5, the group became inaccessible to users in Vietnam. As of the morning of October 6, users attempting to access the page encountered a message stating, ‘Group is not displayed in Vietnam.’
