Vietnam martyr remains recovery operations
Overview
Military and local authorities in Vietnam and Cambodia continue operations to recover the remains of war martyrs.
In Quang Ngai province, an excavation team of 18 personnel, including military engineers and community members, recovered three sets of remains at the Duc Pho medical station (also known as Ho Sau medical station) between October 30 and 31, 2026. The operation, which utilized both manual methods and machinery to excavate a 50-square-meter area, yielded skulls, teeth, and long bones alongside personal artifacts such as medicated oil, a mirror, buttons, an inhaler, and military hammocks. These individuals are believed to have died between 1972 and 1974.
In Ca Mau province, search teams have recovered four sets of remains at the former Tan Bang commune People's Committee headquarters, a site that served as a temporary cemetery during the war. This follows previous discoveries in Tan Buu hamlet and Ho Thi Ky commune. To date, a total of 16 sets of remains have been recovered in Ca Mau province as part of a 500-day campaign.
Additionally, the K52 team from the Gia Lai provincial military command recovered six sets of remains across the Rattanakiri, Stung Treng, and Preah Vihear provinces in Cambodia. These remains were located near the Se Kong River and former military encampments based on information from local residents. The remains are currently unidentified and show signs of significant decomposition.
