Vietnam quantum technology development strategy

Overview

Experts are advising Vietnam on strategies to develop its national quantum technology capabilities. Initial recommendations from Dr. Ngo Chi Vinh emphasize the need for a strategic roadmap to ensure national sovereignty and avoid fragmented investments. He suggests prioritizing post-quantum cryptography and cybersecurity, training application-oriented engineers, and establishing a dedicated coordinating agency. Vinh also proposed that the State stimulate domestic demand by setting transition deadlines for critical sectors like finance and telecommunications.

Building on these needs, Professor Nguyen Luong Quang suggested leveraging European Union expertise to accelerate progress. This approach includes developing highly skilled human resources through interdisciplinary programs and utilizing long-term scholarships or internships in European laboratories. To manage costs, Quang proposed developing domestic research infrastructure that could be remotely connected to European quantum computing systems. Additionally, there is a focus on integrating Vietnamese technology and software companies into the global quantum value chain through government support such as tax incentives and innovation funds.

Recent diplomatic and corporate developments have begun to operationalize these strategies. During a state visit to Denmark, Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam visited the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen to reinforce scientific cooperation. Concurrently, the Vietnamese technology corporation FPT signed a memorandum of understanding with the Niels Bohr Institute. This partnership focuses on quantum materials, chip components, and photonic technology, aiming to facilitate joint research projects and the exchange of PhD students, scientists, and experts to enhance research capabilities within Vietnam.
