Vietnam War Invalids and Martyrs Day commemoration

In late July 2026, President To Lam issued a letter marking the 79th Veterans and Martyrs Day, thanking war veterans, martyrs, disabled veterans, families of the fallen and former security personnel, and urging that their sacrifices remain a foundation for national development.

A week later, Vice‑Premier Phạm Thị Thanh Trà signed Decision No. 1471/QĐ‑TTg, launching a comprehensive programme to observe the 80th anniversary of the War Invalids and Martyrs Day (27 July 1947 – 27 July 2027). The plan, formally unveiled on 31 July 2026, sets out tasks, timelines and responsibilities for ministries, central agencies and local governments. It calls for upgrading all memorial sites, establishing a martyr shrine in every province, a 500‑day campaign to locate and identify unknown war remains, renovating veteran care centres, rebuilding housing for children of war‑affected families, and providing gifts or cash to veteran mothers. The programme also stresses intensified propaganda, education and moral responsibility, especially among youth.

On 27 July 2026, the 79th anniversary was marked with nationwide ceremonies. Nearly 50 staff and students from the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi visited the historic Hoà Lò Prison, toured exhibitions and performed an incense‑offering ceremony. In Quang Trị province, an outdoor artistic program titled “Thắp đỏ non sông – Nối dài khát vọng” featured popular singers, modern lighting and free coffee provided by the Trung Nguyên Legend group, underscoring the event’s national significance.

These activities together illustrate Vietnam’s ongoing effort to honour its war heroes, support veterans and their families, and embed the memory of sacrifice in the country’s social and educational fabric.
